Responsibility as an expression of freedom

"In business, it is often said: 'The greater the freedom, the greater the responsibility,'" said President Manuel Ammann in his graduation address. He explained that founding or managing a company means bearing responsibility on several levels: for the organisation's economic well-being; for employees; for customers; and ultimately, for society.

But what happens when we fail to assume this responsibility? 'We outsource our ability to act – to other people, to time, to some "system",' said Ammann. This may bring short-term relief, but in the long run, we risk forgetting that responsibility is synonymous with freedom – the freedom to shape our future.

“Being able to assume responsibility is an expression of our freedom and our capacity to shape.”
Manuel Ammann, President of the University of St.Gallen

This, he emphasised, is where HSG's educational mission comes in: "We do not want to equip our students solely with specialist knowledge; we also want to shape them into individuals who are able – and willing – to take responsibility." To co-create. To reflect. Forming an opinion and defending it. To be actively engaged, through one of the 140+ student associations at HSG, in service of a good cause, or as part of the HSG Alumni community later on.

The ‘HSG spirit’ endures

HSG Alumni President Mathieu Jaus also emphasised the unique combination of local accessibility and global reach:: "HSG is small enough for people to constantly meet each other on campus. At the same time, it is international enough to maintain a global network."

“Origin is not a heavy backpack – it is a toolbox filled with knowledge, resilience and a network of inspiring people.”
Mathieu Jaus, President of HSG Alumni

Learning, he said, has never only taken place in the lecture hall, but also in initiatives and associations, group projects, events, sports and social life. Now, it is time to set out into the future, “with roots in St.Gallen and wings spread wide across the world”.
