Climate change, the loss of biodiversity or the war in Ukraine - the multiple crises of the present show the limits of our education and research. In this interview, the Swiss writer and Georg Büchner Prize winner Lukas Bärfuss examines systemic thinking and action and argues for not tackling the simultaneous, serious problems separately, but for seeing the bigger picture. Thinking in strictly separated disciplines, which once made the success of positivist sciences, has become a problem according to Bärfuss. "We need more people who can also think the bigger picture within a specialisation," says Bärfuss and calls for a shift towards systemic and critical thinking in research and education.
Lukas Bärfuss is «Artist in Residence» at HSG SQUARE from 12 - 15 September 2023.
