Sustainability integration into teaching activities

Teaching and learning for the twenty-first century

University of St.Gallen students think integratively and take action reflectively, thereby building and applying the knowledge and competencies needed to excel in management and leadership in a transforming world.

A European leader in business education, we differentiate ourselves through our holistic approach to teaching and learning, supporting students in creating and applying the knowledge to realize entrepreneurial impact in business, society and academia.

With a strong foundation of courses and programmes focused on responsibility and sustainability, we are committed to further embedding sustainability within our curricula, building on three pillars:

Our interdisciplinary research enables us to support our students in developing the knowledge and competencies to manage and lead in the twenty-first century with evidence-based insights. Current research foci include evolving student needs in business education in a changing world, and the development of sustainability competencies in business students through teaching.

We are increasingly integrating courses and programs emphasizing competency development in the areas of sustainability and responsibility. In addition to certificate programs such as the Master certificate in Managing Climate Solutions (MaCS) and the Bachelor certificate in Integrative Sustainability Management (SuM), HSG offers a wide range of sustainability courses within its Contextual Studies portfolio. Core study programmes have increasingly incorporated sustainability courses into their offerings. Furthermore, our executive education offerings include a broad range of sustainability-related content as well as specific courses on e.g., Renewable Energy Management and Leading Sustainability Transformation.

In line with the University of St.Gallen Sustainability Strategy, Teach for Impact supports faculty and programs in empowering students as responsible leaders able to manage and lead with impact in a transitioning world. The Initiative convenes stakeholders, knowledge and best practices from across schools, institutes, and student associations, providing curated educational resources. Through this, it supports an integrated approach to teaching and learning. Interdisciplinary exchange is central to our approach. Teach for Impact includes:

  • An open digital resource hub of teaching resources
  • Capacity building activities including seminars, workshops, and events
  • Customized support for programmes, teams, and individuals

As a HSG faculty, you will be able to discover available continuing education offerings and workshops, connect with the St.Gallen network of sustainability faculty, and import modules, pages, and other resources directly into your courses from Teach for Impact’s Hub on Canvas, going live soon.
