With the graduation of the first students from the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science, a central goal of the Canton of St.Gallen’s IT Education Initiative has been fulfilled. The initiative was approved by the voters of Canton St.Gallen in 2019 with a clear majority and established the development of a university-level computer science program as a strategic goal. The IT Education Initiative aims to sustainably strengthen the business location of St.Gallen and the surrounding region.
Five years after the founding of the School of Computer Science (SCS-HSG), around 250 students are already enrolled in computer science programes. The first graduates are laying the foundation for the continued development of the program, whether by pursuing a master’s degree or joining companies across various industries. Many of them are already actively involved in projects at the intersection of computer science and business.
One of them is Andrin Benz from the city of St.Gallen. After successfully completing his bachelor’s degree, he will now continue his academic journey in the Master’s programme in Computer Science at HSG, while also working part-time at a young technology startup. His story exemplifies the dynamic development within computer science education. “The Bachelor in Computer Science at HSG has provided me with a solid foundation to connect computer science with entrepreneurial thinking. I’m looking forward to deepening my knowledge in the master’s programme while gaining practical experience in a dynamic environment,” says Andrin Benz.
The Computer Science programmes at HSG offers a unique and modern educational profile that combines computer science with business expertise. “With our first bachelor’s graduates, we are celebrating an important milestone for computer science at HSG. They have demonstrated not only solid technical skills but also the ability and determination to use computer science methods to solve economic and societal challenges,” says HSG Professor Simon Mayer, Dean of the School of Computer Science.
The School of Computer Science offers programmes at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. By studying computer science at the University of St.Gallen, students gain both a deep technical understanding and the relevant skills to bring new technologies and business ideas into the professional world. Our study programmes are characterized by small class sizes and personal supervision. Computer science plays an increasingly important role today and will continue to do so in the future. In addition, HSG offers numerous events and student associations that provide excellent opportunities to build strong networks. Integration programmes during the first weeks of the semester help students quickly become familiar with the university’s unique campus culture and everything the city has to offer.
