Master Business Innovation (MBI)

Admissions & Start of Studies

For all questions regarding admission, please contact the Admissions and Crediting Office of the University of St.Gallen.

The MBI Kick-off marks the official start of the MBI programme and takes place as an introductory event in calendar week 37 (KW37) before the beginning of the academic term.

The event is mandatory for all MBI students enrolled in the compulsory course “Fundamentals of Business Innovation” during the autumn semester. The MBI Kick-off days are an integral part of this course and take place one week prior to the official start of lectures, before the regular teaching period begins.

This multidisciplinary foundation course supports integration and provides a shared reference framework and knowledge base. In addition to building core academic competencies, the four-day programme places strong emphasis on networking within the MBI community.

If you have completed your Bachelor’s degree at the University of St.Gallen (HSG), you may start the programme in the spring semester.

For all applicants with a degree from another university, starting is only possible in the autumn semester.

Programme Structure

The Master in Business Innovation can only be completed within the communicated duration of three to four semesters as a full-time programme. It is therefore recommended to prioritise your studies and attend classes regularly.

The programme is designed to be relatively flexible, and HSG students typically combine their studies with an additional workload of approximately 20–70%. A higher workload is not generally excluded.

However, especially in the first autumn semester, we strongly advise against taking on additional employment due to the intensive compulsory coursework and recommend full participation in all classes.

According to Article 2 of the Study Regulations, an exchange semester is not possible in the first semester of the Master’s level. In addition, an exchange semester is recommended in the third semester. Further information on exchange opportunities in the MBI programme can be found here.

MBI students also have the opportunity to pursue a double degree at one of the partner universities. In addition, there is the option to complete the CEMS Master’s in International Management (MiM) double degree.

All MBI courses can be found in the HSG course catalogue. The fact sheets provide detailed course information, including dates and room details.

The University of St.Gallen distinguishes between central and decentralised examinations.

The respective examination format can be found in the course fact sheet. Decentralised examinations are held during the semester and are the responsibility of the respective lecturer. Central examinations take place during the examination period in the lecture-free time.
