Nye was a scientist, political advisor and long-time dean of the Harvard Kennedy School. He worked in the field of national security under US Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
Prof Joe Nye's central works include the concepts of 'complex interdependence' between states and 'soft power', which states that countries can also expand their power through 'soft' factors such as culture. In 2005, the University of St. Gallen awarded Joseph Nye an honorary doctorate in political science (Dr. rer. publ. h.c.) in recognition of his outstanding services to political science, in particular the theory of international relations.
Prof. James Davis, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science at the University of St.Gallen (HSG), honours Joe Nye as a 'giant in the field of international relations'. The HSG bows to an outstanding life's work and remembers Joe Nye with great gratitude and solidarity.
