Springer Nature / SAGE: No Deal 2026

The negotiations with the publishers Springer Nature and SAGE for an extension of the existing Read & Publish Agreements could not be concluded by the deadline of the end of 2025. Even though the negotiations between the parties are continuing, we will start 2026 with no agreements in place. This will have various implications for members of the University of St.Gallen.

Read access to content published until 2025

No changes: We have ongoing access to all previously available content from Springer Nature and SAGE.

Read access to content published in 2026

  • Springer Nature: Until further notice, access to new content published in 2026 is possible. Springer Nature is granting access during a «grace period», for the duration of the ongoing negotiations.
  • SAGE: Unfortunately, the publisher has decided to give no access to new content published in 2026, until a new contract is in place. If you require access to content from SAGE journals that has been newly published in 2026, please consult our page Alternative Sources for Journal Articles.

Open Access Publishing

For articles accepted for publication in participating Springer Nature or SAGE journals after January 1, 2026, the costs of Open Access publication cannot be covered during the contract-free period. Whether affected articles can be published retrospectively in Open Access is now part of the ongoing negotiations.

Researchers can continue to publish in hybrid journals, but they are encouraged not to pay any Article Processing Charges (APC). APCs are a source of income for the publishers. This weakens our negotiating position.

We recommend that researchers exercise their rights and deposit the accepted manuscript version in Alexandria (Green Open Access). Depending on the journal's policy, an embargo period may apply. The HSG Library can help you with this: openaccessunisg.ch.

If there should be any changes to the current situation, we will update this page.
