Discovering the HSG campus art with the aid of a smartphone

29 August 2018. Art and architecture belong together at the University of St.Gallen. Even as the campus on the Rosenberg was being built in 1963, art was automatically integrated into the building complex. The dialogue between art and architecture thus runs through all the buildings and has been continued over the last few decades in the new buildings as well. With more than 50 works of art, the University of St.Gallen (HSG) boasts an impressive collection of modern art that is publicly accessible.

“In a way, art exemplifies the integrative approach to education at the HSG. It provides a source of inspiration and a surface for reflection and projection of one’s own thoughts. Important works are accessible to the public at our location, both on and within buildings, and the majority were created by the artists specially for this space”, says Dr. Bruno Hensler, Director of Administration at the University of St.Gallen. With the newly launched art app “Art@HSG”, guests can now seek out the sculpture by Alberto Giacometti or the frieze by Joan Miró, discover the Tree of Bowls by Hans Arp, or marvel at the fountain by François Stahly.

The “Art@HSG” app can be downloaded via the app store or Google Play. It is available both on- and offline and recognises the works of art on the campus as soon as the visitor approaches them with their smartphone or tablet. In addition, there is a brief overview of the artwork, a more detailed explanation, and information on the artist. Furthermore, there are three separate tours covering the Library Building, the main building, and the outdoor area.
