Professional Career

Lukas Hemmje studied law at the universities of Heidelberg, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark. He completed the First State Exam in Law (1. Juristisches Staatsexamen) with a specialisation in Public International Law in 2024.

From 2020 to 2024, Lukas worked at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. There, he was a research assistant and then research fellow in a project on the prohibition of the use of force, as well as coach of the Heidelberg team for the 2023 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court. His academic work is complimented by practical experience, interning with German and international law firms and the German Foreign Office, as well as working as a graduate research assistant for the Parliamentary Research Services of the German Bundestag. 

In his research, Lukas focuses on the law of the use of force and related fields of public international law. Further interests include general international law, the law of personal immunities, as well as German and European defence & security policy.
