Tobias Sutter completed his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and his Master's degree in Robotics & Control at ETH Zurich. In 2017, he earned his doctorate there with a dissertation on "Convex programming in optimal control and information theory." After completing his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich until 2018 and at EPFL until 2021. Since 2021, he has held the position of Assistant Professor of Machine Learning in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Konstanz.

Research on data-driven decision making

Tobias Sutter’s research focuses on the statistical foundations of algorithmic decision making. At the core is the question of how data can be used to make informed decisions in complex and uncertain environments. He is particularly interested in optimal policy learning in dynamic economic systems and in data-driven decision making under uncertainty. His work draws on methods from reinforcement learning, optimal control, stochastic optimization, and mathematical programming. The aim is to contribute both to theoretical understanding and to the development of robust and scalable algorithmic solutions for practical applications.
