We are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Secretary General. Dr. Matthias Ammann, MBA, will take up the post on 1 January 2026. He was selected from a large pool of highly qualified candidates in a multi-stage recruitment process and was appointed by the Board of Governors at the beginning of September. Matthias Ammann has been working for the SNB in Zurich since 2012, currently as Managing Legal Counsel. In this role, he advises various business areas on legal issues and contributes his expertise in advising the Executive Board and Bank Council. In addition, he is responsible for various projects in the areas of legal tech and legal operations and brings relevant experience to the Legal Department.

Wide-ranging profile

Prior to this, the Doctor of Law (University of Basel) worked for several years as a solicitor at the renowned law firms Vischer and Bär & Karrer. In addition to his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Copenhagen Business School, he has completed various other executive education courses, most recently a CAS in Legal Tech. “We are delighted to have Matthias Ammann, a proven professional with extensive experience in dealing with complex public and private law issues and proceedings, as our new Secretary General,” said President Prof Dr. Manuel Ammann (no relation). “I am looking forward to this exciting task, which will enable me to combine my legal, business and technological skills and interests in a meaningful way,” says Matthias Ammann.

Thanks to interim management

A sincere thank you goes to Dr. Stephanie Bernet, who has been acting as interim Secretary General since May 2025 and will continue in this role until Matthias Ammann takes office. Her extraordinary commitment has ensured continuity during the transition phase. Her predecessor, Dr. David Schneeberger, left the HSG on 1 May 2025 to set up his own law practice.
