Prof. Dr. Julia C. Arlinghaus studied industrial engineering with a focus on production engineering, logistics, and production management at the University of Bremen. In 2011, she received her doctorate from the University of St.Gallen in the field of business innovation. The title of her dissertation was “Performance-oriented integration of combined transport into supply chain concepts.” After working in applied research and consulting – including as a project manager at the Institute for Logistics Management in St.Gallen and as a consultant at Porsche Consulting GmbH – she accepted a position at Jacobs University Bremen in 2013, where she was Associate Professor and Head of Network Optimization in Production and Logistics. She was also head of the Production & Logistics Networks working group and responsible for developing several study programs in the field of supply chain management and industrial engineering.
From 2017 to 2019, she held a W3 professorship for Management of Industry 4.0 / Management of Digitalization and Automation at RWTH Aachen University. In this role, she led a working group and conducted research on intelligent production and logistics systems, business model innovations, and risk analysis in global supply chains, among other topics. At the same time, she coordinated several industry-related research and consulting projects. Since 2019, she has been Professor of Production Systems and Automation at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF Magdeburg.
Prof. Dr. Julia C. Arlinghaus' research focuses on the design of future-oriented production and logistics systems in the context of digitalization, automation, and sustainability. Her research focuses on concepts and methods of Industry 4.0 and 5.0, integrated planning and control processes, and AI-based applications for optimizing value chains. Her work is strongly application-oriented and combines scientific excellence with social relevance. In addition, Prof. Dr. Julia C. Arlinghaus contributes her expertise to national science policy—as chair of the Scientific Commission and the Evaluation Committee of the German Council of Science and Humanities, she has been advising the German federal government on issues related to research, higher education policy, evaluation, and accreditation since 2019.
Prof. Dr. Julia C. Arlinghaus has a wide-range of teaching experience at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. She places particular emphasis on the further development of innovative, interdisciplinary teaching formats and degree programs. Among other things, she played a key role in the development and accreditation of new degree programs in the field of industrial engineering and supply chain management. In cooperation with international partners, such as Abu Dhabi University, she also designed an executive master's program in supply chain management. Her teaching style is characterized by its practical relevance and high didactic quality, which has been recognized with the “Teacher of the Year” award at Jacobs University Bremen, among other honours.
