Appointment: Ferdinand Rauch

Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Rauch has been full professor of economics at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) since 1 August 2025.

Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Rauch completed his master's degree in economics at the University of Vienna in 2006, followed by a Master of Science in Economics at the London School of Economics in 2007. He completed his doctorate at the University of Vienna in 2010. He then worked at the World Bank, as a postdoctoral researcher at the London School of Economics, and, since 2012, at Oxford University, where he was appointed associate professor in 2012 and professor in the Department of Economics in 2021. Since 2022, he has been a W3 professor at Heidelberg University's Alfred Weber Institute. In addition to his academic positions, he has held numerous guest research fellowships at various institutions, including Princeton, the University of St.Gallen, CESifo in Munich, Berkeley, and Humboldt University in Berlin.

Research in the fields of urban economics and trade

Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Rauch's research is empirically oriented, which is why he often develops new data sets in his research work. In terms of content, his research activities focus on urban economics and trade. Current research projects examine, for example, the causes of productivity, the causes of spatial economic organization, and the relationship between urbanization and trade.

Teaching experience at the bachelor's and master's level

Prof. Dr. Rauch has teaching experience at the bachelor's and master's levels. His lectures and seminars are characterized by a high level of interactivity. In all his courses, he tries to incorporate current research, which is analysed in the style of a research seminar, challenging students at an early stage to identify and develop arguments for and against the strengths and weaknesses of the research.
