Appointment: Clemens Stachl

Prof. Dr. Clemens Stachl holds the position of Associate Professor for Behavioral Science at the University of St.Gallen since 1 August 2021.

1 August 2021.  Prof. Dr. Clemens Stachl, born on 11 June 1986, is an Austrian citizen.

In 2012, he graduated with a Master of Science in Experimental Psychology, Methodology and Cognitive Neuroscience from the Karl-Franzens University of Graz. He completed his doctorate in 2017 at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU). The title of his dissertation was "Differential Human Factors in User Data". Together with colleagues, he obtained funding for a three-year interdisciplinary research project entitled "User-Centered Machine Learning" from AUDI AG and remained at LMU as a postdoctoral researcher during this time. In 2019, he moved to Stanford University in California, where he was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Communication.

Research at the interface between behavioural science and computer science

The research of Prof. Dr. Clemens Stachl is located at the interface between behavioural science and computer science and investigates the everyday behaviour of individuals and groups through the use of sensor technologies (e.g. sensor data and user logs in smartphones and mobile devices). In his work he combines methods from behavioural sciences (traditional experimental research) with new approaches to data acquisition (mobile sensing; sensor data in environmental objects and mobile devices) as well as complex data modelling procedures (modelling of unstructured data with advanced machine learning procedures) in an innovative way.

Prof. Dr. Clemens Stachl has already been able to successfully acquire third-party funding in the seven-figure range and has an excellent network, both in the international research community as well as in businesses across various industries. He has produced many excellent articles, which have been published in interdisciplinary as well as technical academic journals. Particularly noteworthy are his contributions in the "Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS)", "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology", "Journal of Psychology", "European Journal of Psychology", "ACM CHI" (ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems), "ACM Pervasive & Ubiquitous Computing" and methodologically relevant journals (e.g. "R Journal"), which are among the most respected journals in their field. The research results have received a great deal of media coverage and have been discussed worldwide in "Forbes", "Harvard Business Review", "Fast Company", and "Die Zeit".

Extensive teaching experience at all levels

Prof. Dr. Clemens Stachl has extensive teaching experience at all levels of academic education (Bachelor, Master, PhD, further education) as well as the supervision of qualification work (Bachelor's/Master's theses, dissertations). Clemens Stachl has extensive teaching experience in the field of experimental, quantitative methods and complex procedures of data generation with mobile devices (e.g. sensor data).
