Jöhr Lecture with Achim Wambach

This year's Walter Adolf Jöhr lecture will be given by Prof. Achim Wambach, President of the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), on the topic of "From donor kidneys to high-frequency trading – economists are redesigning markets". The lecture will take place on Friday, 19 May 2017.

12 May 2017. Prof. Achim Wambach's Walter Adolf Jöhr lecture will provide an insight into this highly topical field of research and its applications: from the stable marriage algorithm and the winner's curse, from the distribution of school places to radio frequency auctions – in the research field of "market design", market rules are developed, tested and implemented.

Researchers on competition policy

Prof. Achim Wambach, Ph.D., has been President of the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) since April 2016. Prior to his move to the ZEW, he was Director of the Institute for Economic Policy (iwp) at the University of Cologne and Co-Director at the European Centre for Liberal Professions at the University of Cologne.

Achim Wambach studied Physics and Mathematics in Cologne and was subsequently awarded a PhD by the University of Oxford. After obtaining the degree of a Master of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics, he habilitated in Economics in Munich. From 2001 to 2005, he was Professor of Economics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Achim Wambach is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, which he chaired from 2012 to 2015. In 2014, Achim Wambach was appointed a member of the Monopolies Commission, and in March 2016, he was elected chairman. Currently, he is chairman of the Management Board of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik).

Achim Wambach's research interests include competition policy issues and information problems in markets. His research draws on methods of market design and industrial economics. He has published numerous articles in renowned academic journals.

Public lecture

The lecture will take place on Friday, 19 May 2017, from 11.15 a.m. in Room 09-011 in the Library Building of the University of St.Gallen. It is open to the public and will be given in German. Admission will be free.
