“Why the euro will fail”

9 April 2013. The future of the single European currency leaves several questions unanswered: Can the contrasts between the member states be ironed out? Or will macroeconomic disequilibria and differing ideas about economic policy lead to the collapse of the single currency? These questions will be looked into by Prof. Dr. Heiner Flassbeck in his lecture on “Why the euro will fail”.

The speaker is regarded as a profound critic of the “economic mainstream”. Heiner Flassbeck was Chief Economist at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). At the HSG, the freelance economist and journalist will speak about his proposition “Why the euro will fail”. Heiner Flassbeck has written several controversial books, among them Zehn Mythen der Krise. After the lecture, he will answer questions from the audience.

The public lecture is organised by the Economic Policy Profile Area of the School of Economics and Political Science (SEPS-HSG) of the University of St.Gallen. The profile area combines basic research with its application in practice and in the debate about economic policy. The members of the profile area are also engaged in the public debate with publications in the media and with lectures. Public lecture about commodities and financial markets
In another lecture at the University of St.Gallen on the same evening, Heiner Flassbeck will speak about the topic of “Commodities and financial markets: reorientation urgently required”. This second lecture is part of the public lecture series “Forum Agrarpolitik” at the HSG. Flassbeck will deliver this lecture in the Library Building, Room 09-110, from 8.15 to 9.45 p.m.
