Additional Information

Tomi Laamanen is Chaired Professor of Strategic Management, Director of the Institute of Management, Director of the PhD Program of General Management, and Academic Director of the Strategy and International Management Master (SIM) Program of the University of St.Gallen. Before University of St.Gallen he was Professor of Strategic Management and Director of the Institute of Strategy at Aalto University (1997-2011), Dean of the Department of Management (TKK, Tuotantotalous) (2001-2002), and External visiting professor at the St.Petersburg State University’s Graduate School of Management (GSOM) (2011-2013). Tomi Laamanen holds two D.Sc. degrees; one in Strategy and one in Finance.  

Professor Laamanen’s research covers the strategic management field broadly ranging from corporate strategy to strategy execution. The special emphasis of his research is on mergers and acquisitions, and in particular, acquisition programs and serial acquirers, management’s cognition, strategy processes and strategic issue management, and capability dynamics. Tomi Laamanen is former Associate Editor of Strategic Management Journal (2009-2015), Editor-in-Chief of Long Range Planning (2016-), and member of the Editorial Boards of Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Discovery, Journal of Management, and Strategic Management Journal. He has also Edited three Special Issues on “Strategy Processes and Practices” in Strategic Management Journal, “Dispersion of Corporate Headquarters of Multinational Companies” in Journal of Management Studies, and “Business Models, Ecosystems and Society in the Sharing Economy” in Academy of Management Discovery.  

In terms of strategic advisory, Professor Laamanen has worked with firms from different industries in different roles as Chairman, Member of the Board, advisor, or strategy trainer. He has been Chairman of five firm’s including the stock listed SSH Communications Security Corporation (2002-2009: NASDAQ: SSH) and Board Member in five others, including the second largest retail bank of Helsinki. Some of the firms that he has worked with include, among others, ABB, Aldata Solution Oyj, Alma Media Oyj, Audi AG, Cable & Wireless Plc, Credit Suisse AG, Deltagon Oy, Electrobit Oyj, Elisa Oyj, Eltel Oy, Emtele Oy, Fortum Oyj, Fresenius S.E., Forbo, Halton Oy, Helsingin OP Pankki Oyj, Honkarakenne Oyj, KPMG Finland and Switzerland, Kesko Oyj, Lemminkäinen Oyj, LähiTapiola, Metso Oyj, Nokia Oyj, Nokia Siemens Networks, Orion Oyj, Pöyry Oyj, Sanoma Oyj, SSH Communications Security Oyj, Teliasonera Oyj, TUV-SUD AG, UPM Kymmene Oyj, Wärtsilä Oyj, and YIT Oyj. A recent focus area of Professor Laamanen has been to study the private banking industry in Switzerland together with KPMG. This collaboration has resulted into seven Private banking reports reporting the state-of-the art of private banking industry in Switzerland.  

In terms of academic positions, Tomi Laamanen is Member of the Executive Board and the Board of the Strategic Management Society and its Treasurer. He has co-chaired two Strategic Management Society’s Special Conferences (in Lapland and in St.Gallen), the Strategy Research Fund (SRF), the Strategy Process IG of the SMS, and the Strategizing Activities and Practices (SAP) IG at the Academy of Management. In addition, he was the Chair of the Strategic Management SIG of EURAM.  

Professor Laamanen has been published in leading international journals, including Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Research Policy, Long Range Planning, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Strategic Organization, and Harvard Business Review.
