In the Autumn Semester, the University of St.Gallen (HSG) will again run a Children’s University. Its young visitors can expect an exciting programme with four thematically independent lectures, which means that they will be able to attend one lecture or all four of them.
23 October 2016. Switzerland, Latin America, migration, work – this year’s Children’s University will devote one afternoon lecture of 45 minutes to each of these topics. The four entertaining and stimulating lectures will introduce children from the third year primary school to topics which professors at the University of St.Gallen examine in their own research.
Four independent lectures
"It takes little to be happy, and who’s happy is a king" – according to this German children’s song, almost all Swiss people would be kings. Why no such person governs this country will be revealed by Prof. Dr. Benjamin Schindler. But not all people are so well off as the Swiss. Many people do not even have the little things it takes to be happy. They have to leave their home and are refugees, among them also countless children like Samira and Karim. Prof. Dr. Christoph Frei will relate how the two children came here and why they had to leave home.
Prof. Dr. Heike Bruch will not speak about kings but about good bosses. After all, it is not least because of those that employees like to go to work, so they also contribute towards people’s happiness. Yvette Sánchez will take the children on a voyage of discovery to Latin America in the wake of Columbus, where they will wonder why the footballer Lionel Messi doesn’t actually speak Latin.
Scenting university air
The Children's University aims to familiarise the HSG's youngest audience with issues that are relevant to society in addition to what they are taught at school. The children will be given an exciting insight into the University, which many pupils will themselves attend in ten, fifteen years. The independent lectures will enable children to follow a topic even if they are only able to attend on one afternoon. The Children’s University is part of the public programme of the University of St.Gallen; admission is free. However, registration is required. Each child will receive an HSG ID card. At the end of the lecture series, pupils who have attended all four lectures will be awarded a certificate of attendance.
