Philosophy and the culture of debate

On 27 September, the HSG will offer a philosophical cinema evening with Fatih Akin’s work "The Edge of Heaven". Journalist Jürgen Kaube will be speaking about the culture of debate in the media.<br/>

21 September 2012. On Thursday, 27 September 2012, at 7.30 p.m., the Institute for Business Ethics (IWE-HSG) will run a philosophical cinema evening in St.Gallen’s arthouse cinema in the Lokremise. KinoK will show Fatih Akin’s film Auf der anderen Seite (The Edge of Heaven; Germany 2007). HSG lecturer Martin Booms will discuss the topic of “Homeland, foreign lands and death”.

The organiser of the “Philosophy in the Cinema” series is the Akademie für Sozialethik und Öffentliche Kultur (ask). In St.Gallen, the cinema evenings take place in cooperation with the Institute for Business Ethics and the KinoK in the Lokremise. Martin Booms is the Managing Director of the Bonn Akademie and Lecturer in Critical Thinking at the HSG. The next performance in the series in the KinoK will be on Wednesday, 7 November 2012, at 7.30 p.m. It will focus on the “Dream of Capitalism” with the help of Christian Petzold’s film Yella (Germany 2007).

Lecture on the culture of debate in the media
A further public event will be offered by the Chair of General History at the University of St.Gallen on Thursday, 27 September 2012, at 7.30 p.m. In St.Gallen’s Festsaal St.Katharinen, Katharinengasse 11, the journalist Jürgen Kaube will be speaking about the significance of the media, particularly newspapers, for the academic and literary culture of debate of our times. Jürgen Kaube is deputy editor of the arts and review section, and research/teaching and humanities editor, of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The lecture will be open to the public; admission will be free of charge.
