"HSG am Puls" on nuclear phase-out

The Federal Council wants to phase out nuclear energy. What consequences would a phase-out have? In "HSG am Puls" on 24 October at 6.15 p.m., four professors will discuss the issue in public.

17. August 2011. The question of the future of energy is about more than being for or against nuclear power generation. For instance, it is about costs. Energy is derived from nature, but we pay our energy bills to power generators and oil companies. What do we actually pay for? And do we cover all the costs that energy production causes? Also, how deep do the general public dig into their pockets – for short-term and longer-term costs?

Alternative energies appear to carry fewer risks than nuclear energy, but they are not free from problems, either. For example, there is the thought of how they can change the landscape and whether they are able to guarantee security of supply. And do they cost substantially more than nuclear energy?

TVO to record the discussion

These and further questions will be discussed at the public panel discussion on “Nuclear phase-out – (not) a problem?” in the HSG Audimax on Monday, 24 October, from 6.15 p.m. It will be the second event in the HSG am Puls series in autumn 2011. TVO will record the discussion and air it on Sunday, 30 October, from 6.30 p.m.

Various perspectives

Four HSG professors will join in the discussion: energy expert Rolf Wüstenhagen, the finance expert Manuel Amman, the legal expert Thomas Geiser and the sociologist Franz Schultheis. The discussion will be chaired by Hanspeter Spörri, Eastern Swiss journalist and former editor of the Bernese daily newspaper, Der Bund. The general public is cordially invited to attend and ask questions.
