Renewable energies for the future

March 2, 2011. The forum will take place on March 10 and 11 at the Einstein Congress Hotel in St.Gallen. Experts in the fields of science, politics and economics will discuss the following topics:

Solar energy from North Africa?

Through the Desertec initiative, leading companies want to meet Europe’s growing energy needs with renewable energies produced in sunny North Africa. Countries like Tunisia, Morocco or Egypt can tap their potential for producing solar energy and lay the foundation for sustainable economic development. But how will current events in North Africa affect this kind of development? Will the political risks endanger the economic viability of this visionary project? Or, is now the right time to support the development of that region with future-oriented investments? Cornelius Matthes, Director Business Alliances at Dii GmbH (Desertec), will provide insight into these and other topical subjects.

Future energy for the Lake Constance region
Using local renewable energies is one way to minimize the dependence on energy imports. The University of St.Gallen, in conjunction with other local universities, explores perspectives for sustaining the Lake Constance region with renewable energies. What do consumers think? What kind of energy mix do people in this region want? What are their expectations for energy policy? And what are the obstacles? HSG Prof. Dr. Rolf Wüstenhagen and his team have taken the pulse of the population of Northeast Switzerland, South Germany, Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein in a large-scale survey. Those questions will be answered and addressed by experts when the results are presented at the forum.
