Tennis elite competing in St.Gallen

25 August 2011. Seventy-five players participating on 12 women’s teams and 13 men’s teams, and representing 18 universities, will compete for the titles of European student champions in St.Gallen’s Gründenmoos and Ullmann Tennis Centers. The teams are not national selections but university teams, which have usually won the national university championships of their countries.

HSG’s sports department is organizing the European Championship on behalf of the European University Sports Association (EUSA). Teams from Cyprus, Germany, Holland, France, Ireland, Poland, Russia, Spain, Britain, Turkey and Switzerland will compete. Swiss players include Luca Bianchi, Andrin Wacker and David Zogg from HSG, and Patrick Fischer, Laurent Hunziker, Andrej Sollberger and Yannick Sollberger from the University of Bern.

Opening on campus

St.Gallen University will host the opening ceremony on Sunday, September 4, at 8:30 p.m. There won’t be any games on Wednesday, September 7, so participants can spend the day exploring the city and region. The finals will be Saturday, September 10. The closing ceremony at the university’s Center for Further Education will round off the tennis week in a festive setting. The first time in German-speaking Switzerland

This is the first time in the history of European university sports that the European Universities Championship (EUC) is being held in German-speaking Switzerland, and only the third such event in Switzerland, altogether. The University of Geneva hosted the basketball EUC in 2007 and the badminton EUC in 2009.
