Financial crisis in Latin America

On 5 November 2009 at 6.15 p.m. in the Auditorium 09-011, the Latin-American Center of the University of St.Gallen (CLS-HSG) will offer a public lecture by Prof. Ricardo Hipólito López Murphy.

29 October 2009. The former Argentinian Minister of Defense and the Economy will speak about “Why did Latin America suffer less from the crisis this time?”. In his lecture, López Murphy will report on current trends in Argentinian economic policy and explain how Latin America is responding to the consequences of the present crisis on the financial markets. Everyone is welcome to attend this lecture, which will be given in English and will be free of charge.

Impressive career
Prof. Ricardo López Murphy’s academic and political career is impressive: he taught and researched at various Argentinian universities, held two cabinet posts, was a presidential candidate in his country, and was a consultant to companies and organizations such as the IMF, the World Bank, CEPAL and the foundation and economic think tank FIEL (Fundación de Investigaciones Económicas Latinoamericanas).

Minister of Defense and Economy
He also taught Political Economy, Macroeconomics and Public Finance at the HSG’s partner university San Andrés, Argentina. He was Minister of Defense from 1999-2001 and Minister of the Economy not long before the crisis in 2001. Prof. López Murphy read Economics at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Chicago.
