Reading Lukas Hartmann

On Thursday, 2 July 2009, at 7.30 p.m., Lukas Hartmann will read from his book Bis ans Ende der Meere (to the end of the seas).

25 June 2009. In his historical novel, Lukas Hartmann tells the story of the enigmatic Captain James Cook. In the late 18th century, the young English painter John Webber discovered the celebrated explorer’s secret.

The reading in the Library of the University of St.Gallen (HSG) will be chaired by Matthias Peter, the Artistic Director of the Kellerbühne St.Gallen. The reading is part of the series Das andere Buch an der Uni. Admission will be free.

From teacher to author
Lukas Hartmann, born in Berne in 1944, was a teacher first and later studied German and psychology. Subsequently he worked as a youth counsellor, as an editor for the Swiss radio channel, DRS, as a lecturer in journalism, as a leader of writing workshops and as a media consultant. His many travels led him to India, South America and Africa.

After a stint in the Instituto svizzero in Rome, he now lives as a writer in Spiegel near Berne. He writes novels for adults and children. His latest publications include the novel Die letzte Nacht der alten Zeit (2007), Die Deutsche im Dorf (2005), as well as the children’s books Heul nicht, kleiner Seehund (2006) und GloriaFuria und die schlimme Marie (2003).
