“Growth, the soul and money”

19 November 2010. Hans Christoph Binswanger is among the most significant economists to have taught and researched at the University of St.Gallen in the last 50 years. His field is the growth dynamism of the modern economy. He did not only propound well-founded analyses of his own about this issue but also took an emphatic stand for moderate growth. His ideas initiated an ecological tax reform in Germany. They influenced Swiss and later European agricultural policy.

Against narrowly defined disciplines
As a municipal parliamentarian in St.Gallen, Hans Christoph Binswanger campaigned for a kind of urban development process which respects structures that have grown in the course of history. Binswanger has never stuck to closely defined disciplines and has demonstrated that other forms of knowledge, such as literature or mythology, contain fundamental economic insights.

The son of artists
The book traces Binswanger’s career. As the child of artists, he grew up in a fascinating world to become one of the most prominent environmental economists in the German-speaking area. Several contributions present his economic thinking and document his life and work.

Public vernissage
The vernissage will take place in Room 01-012 of the Main Building of the University of St.Gallen on Friday, 3 December 2010, at 6.15 p.m. The editor, Prof. Dr. Dr. Roland Kley, will present the book. Prof. em. Dr. Hans Christoph Binswanger will read from his latest works. The event is open to the general public. The book will be available in bookshops from December.
