Ulrich Schmid, HSG Professor of Russian Culture and Society, was among the guests in the Rundschau programme of Swiss Television of 5 March. Crimea – a special case In a blog article on the website of the Financial Times, Professor Schmid responded to the questions as to whether Ukraine would fall apart, what position Russia was occupying, how the EU was looking on Ukraine and who could become the next Ukrainian president. He explained, among other things, the extent to which the Crimean peninsula is a special case. On the one hand, there are the Crimean tatars, who had been expelled under Stalin and allowed to return to the peninsula in 1988; they side with Ukraine. On the other hand, there are the Russian immigrants, who favour reunification with Russia. Ulrich Schmid also provided background information about the conflict in Ukraine in a topical video interview for the HSG’s website: "Crimea Crisis – Power struggle in the Crimea". In an interview on Radio SRF Daniel Woker, HSG lecturer and former ambassador, spoke about why he did not regard it as a problem if Federal Councillor Alain Berset did not attend the Paralympics in Sochi – officially for reasons of time; but the conflict in Ukraine is bound to come into it too. Guests in St.Gallen In the wake of the adoption of the Mass Immigration Initiative, Finnish Television Yle travelled to St.Gallen to produce a background report, in which Patrick Emmenegger, HSG Professor of Political Science, was able to voice his observations.
