Appointment: Simon Mayer

Dr. Simon Mayer has been a Full Professor for Interaction- and Communication-based Systems since 1 August 2018.

1 August 2018. Dr. Simon Mayer, born 16 July 1987, is an Austrian citizen.

Dr. Mayer completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Informatics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, ETH Zurich. From 2010 until 2014, he was a research associate in the Distributed Systems research group led by Professor Friedemann Mattern at ETH Zurich. During this time, he successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business Administration at the University of Zurich, a Master of Advanced Studies in Secondary and Higher Education (Swiss Teaching Diploma) at ETH Zurich and acquired his doctorate at ETH Zurich with the thesis "Interacting with the Web of Things". In 2012 he was Visiting Researcher at the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was subsequently responsible for the back-end development of the CloudThink System at MIT. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked at Siemens Corporate Technology in Berkeley, USA, from 2014 until 2017, most recently as Senior Key Expert for Smart and Interacting Systems. At the end of 2017, he returned to Europe as the Head of the Cognitive Products research group at the Austrian COMET research centre Pro²Future, and as a project researcher at Graz University of Technology's Institute of Technical Informatics.

Research relating to industry 4.0

Dr. Simon Mayer works intensively on the topic of the industrial internet of things. As such, his research encompasses the web-based interaction of various cyber-physical systems with one another and with people. Applications in this field are focused on the transport sector, but particularly in industrial production and the topics surrounding industry 4.0. He has authored a large number of publications on these topics, which have appeared at/in leading international conferences and magazines.

Extensive teaching experience and Swiss Teaching Diploma

Dr. Simon Mayer has already gathered extensive teaching experience through courses at the Graz University of Technology, ETH Zurich, University of California at Berkeley and through his involvement in courses at MIT – these courses were primarily directed at post-graduate students and doctoral candidates. During the course of his Swiss Teaching Diploma, Dr. Mayer was also able to gather experience at the Zurich Technical Vocational School (TBZ); in addition, he worked in summer schools and as an assistant on courses within Bachelor's programmes in Informatics, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at ETH Zurich.

The focus of Dr. Simon Mayer's position lies in the development of the area of informatics with a focus on teaching and research in the fields of distributed systems, internet of things and human-machine interaction.
