Appointment: Siegfried Handschuh

Prof. Dr. Siegfried Handschuh is a Full Professor of Data Science since August 1, 2018.

1. August 2018. Prof. Dr. Siegfried Handschuh, born March 4, 1970, is a German citizen.

Prof. Handschuh studied Computer Science in Ulm and Information Science in Konstanz. After his studies in 1997/98 he worked at the Institute for Media and Communication Management at the University of St. Gallen and subsequently at the Institute for Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at the University of Karlsruhe (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). 2001 followed a research stay at the Database Group at Standford University in the USA. In 2005 he received his doctorate, with distinction, in Karlsruhe.

He spent from 2006 to 2015 at the National University of Ireland, Galway, where he became Professor in 2013. He led the Knowledge Discovery Unit at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in Galway.  After this, he was appointed Professor (W3) of Computer Science at the University of Passau in 2014. There he was co-director of the Passau Center for eHumanities (PACE) and head of the research group Natural Language Processing and Semantic Computing.

Research: Semantics of Data and Deep Learning

Prof. Dr. Siegfried Handschuh is an outstanding scientist in the field of data science (semantics of data) and natural language processing (NLP). His research focuses on the combination of compositional linguistic methods (distributional semantics and word embedding) with machine learning techniques, especially deep learning approaches. For his research in Passau, his chair was awarded the NVIDIA Cuda Research Center 2014. There he used graphics processors for high-performance analysis of Big-Text-Data, but also for multimodal image analysis.

At the University of St.Gallen, Prof. Handschuh will also deal with the language problem of Artificial Intelligence and the idea of the automated data scientist. In the area of applied research, he strives to collaborate with the core disciplines of the University to address issues such as FinTech, LegalTech, eHumanities and Business Research.

Teaching in Computer Science

The chair deals with novel methods and algorithms for the analysis of massive and complex data sets. Teaching covers essential basics such as machine learning, data mining and natural language processing. In addition to these tasks, the chair supports the thematic area of databases. The focus of Prof. Dr. Siegfried Handschuh's employment lies in the establishment of the Computer Science field.
