23 March 2015. The senate of Wroclaw University of Economics has awarded Hubert Österle an Honorary Doctorate in Economic Sciences in recognition of his international academic contributions to business IT, particularly to business and life engineering and to design-oriented research. Besides Hubert Österle’s academic achievements, the Senate did not only honour his entrepreneurial activities with the Information Management Group and the St.Gallen Business Engineering Institute, but also his commitment to teaching, particularly with the establishment of the Executive MBA in Business Engineering at the HSG.

The Digital Neighbourhood research project

Hubert Österle has conducted research in the field of Ambient Assisted Living for many years. Together with his team in St.Gallen, Leipzig and Wroclaw, he is working on concepts and solutions in which information technology provides people with freedom, self-determination and recognition in their home environments. The goal is a digital neighbourhood in which people know each other personally, in which they can obtain all products and services without travelling any long distances, and in which they ultimately feel at home.

At present, pilot projects with this platform are running in St.Gallen and in Weil der Stadt (Baden-Württemberg), and will soon be under way in Wroclaw and Salzburg. They are intended to reveal whether and how a digital platform can contribute to life in the neighbourhood.
