8 March 2012. The Institute of Advanced Studies (IHS) is an independent research institute that was established by the sociologist Paul F. Lazarsfeld and the economist Oskar Morgenstern in Vienna in 1963. Christian Keuschnigg, HSG Professor of Economics, was himself a scholar at the HIS and then a member of the institution’s research staff for several years. The IHS is traditionally headed by a university professor.

Continuing work at the HSG

After his habilitation at Vienna University in 1996, Keuschnigg was appointed to a professorship at Saarland University. Since 2000, he has been teaching as a Professor of Economics with a focus on Public Finance at the University of St.Gallen and has been Director of the FGN-HSG. He is Chairman of the Public Finance Council of the Verein für Socialpolitik and Research Fellow in the research networks CEPR, CESifo, Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation and NetSpar. His current research foci include the theory of taxation, corporate funding and capital market frictions, the welfare state and the labour market.

Christian Keuschnigg will continue to work as a professor at the University of St.Gallen, albeit with a reduced workload. The combination of the two functions will result in new possibilities for transnational cooperation in research, teaching and political consultancy with the University of St.Gallen.

Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna

With its Departments of Economics and Finance, Political Science and Sociology, the Institute has an interdisciplinary orientation. It occupies a special position in Austria in academic basic research, in academic political consultancy and in the public debate of economic policy. At present, the Institute employs about 80 research staff and, besides being funded by the public purse, raises approx. 40 per cent of its own funds by commissioned research in the context of academic political consultancy.
