Appointment: Björn Ambos

Björn Ambos was born in Hamburg on 2 September 1971. He is a German national.

Prof. Dr. Björn Ambos read Business Administration at Universität Hamburg and at Florida State University (USA). After obtaining the degree of a Diplomkaufmann from Universität Hamburg, he was awarded a doctorate in International Management and went on to write his habilitation thesis at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

Consultancy and research cooperation
At the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Björn Ambos worked as Professor of International Management & Marketing and as Academic Director of the CEMS MIM (Master in International Management). He experienced practical working life as a product manager for a German tour operator in Vietnam, Italy, Paris and New York. Intensive consultancy and research cooperation, for instance with the Austria Research Centers Seibersdorf (ARCS), EADS, Ford Motor Co, Henkel, Honda, Olympus, Puma, Royal Dutch Shell, Scottish National Orchestra, Siemens, Unilever and Villeroy & Boch provide him with close links to practice.

Wide range of publications
Prof. Dr. Björn Ambos is an internationally renowned academic with an extensive range of publications. Professor Ambos has regularly presented his research results at international conferences, for instance at those of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society. In the discipline of Strategic Management, he has worked on research fields such as global strategy, knowledge management and innovation in multinational companies. His work on the role of group headquarters, their relationships with business units, R&D investments and control mechanisms has been published in internationally leading journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, the Management International Review, the Journal of World Business, Research Policy, Long Range Planning and R&D Management. Furthermore, his work has earned him numerous awards.

A treasure trove of international experience
Prof. Dr. Ambos has a wealth of international experience. He worked at the University of Edinburgh for several years and was a visiting professor at Bocconi University (Italy) and Florida University (USA). He is a scientific advisor to the National Research Foundation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Teaching at degree-course level and in executive education
Professor Ambos is widely experienced both in degree-course education and in executive education. For example, he taught courses on Strategic Management in the MBA and EMBA programmes of the Vienna University of Economics and Business and was responsible for the in-house programmes and the CEMS programme in his capacity as Academic Director. Besides teaching at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, he has taught at other reputable universities, among them the University of Edinburgh, Universität Hamburg, ESADE, Erasmus University, the University of Ljubljana and JiangXi University.

Director at the Institute of Management
At the HSG, Prof. Dr. Björn Ambos offers lectures such as “Knowledge Strategy” and the compulsory course on “Global Strategic Management” in the CEMS Master’s programme. In addition, he will enrich the Master’s programme in Business Management with a “strategy simulation”. As Full Professor of Strategic Management, Prof. Ambos will hold the position of a Director at the Institute of Management.
