Appointment: Thomas Beschorner Since 1 February 2011, Prof. Dr. Thomas Beschorner has been Full Professor of Business Ethics at the Institute for Business Ethics, (IWE-HSG), where he works as a Director. Thomas Beschorner was born in Göttingen on 6 May 1970. He is of German nationality with a permanent residence permit in Canada, married to a Canadian national and the father of a daughter. Prize of the Plansecur Foundation From 1986 to 1989, Thomas Beschorner served a professional traineeship in wholesale and foreign trade. After reading economic sciences and business education at the University of Kassel and the National University of Ireland, he was granted a PhD bursary at the Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt. He obtained his doctor’s degree in 2001 with a monograph entitled Ökonomie als Handlungstheorie. Evolutorische Ökonomik, verstehende Soziologie und Unternehmensethik. In 2002, this work earned the prize of the Plansecur Foundation for the best German-language doctoral thesis in the field of economic and business ethics. Societal learning and sustainability From 2002 to 2007, Prof. Beschorner headed the GELENA research group “Societal Learning and Sustainability” at the University of Oldenburg, where he habilitated in 2007. Visiting professorships in Montreal At the same time, Beschorner held various positions in Canada from 2001 to 2006. From 2001 to 2002, he was a post-doctoral fellow of Concordia University, Montreal, and professor at the Dawson College. From 2003 to 2005, he held a scholarship at the Centre de Recherche en Éthique de l’Université de Montréal. From 2005 to 2006, he worked at the McGill University in Montreal as a visiting professor. From 2007 to 2009, he was DAAD Professor at the Centre canadien d’études allemandes et européennes of the University of Montreal, where he has been an associate professor since 2007. Wide range of research interests Prof. Dr. Thomas Beschorner’s publications document a wide range of research interests. His focal points are in the fields of sustainability research, corporate responsibility, corporate theory and organisation research, in institutional research and in evolutionary economics. Founder and editor Besides just under fifty articles and book chapters, he has published one monograph, co-authored two books and edited eleven books. Moreover, he is the founder and editor of the Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik, one of the leading journals in his field of research, founder and co-editor of the two book series Schriftenreihe für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik (20 volumes since 2000) and Ethik und Ökonomie (5 volumes since 2005), and founder and co-editor of CSR NEWS and CSR MAGAZIN. Teaching since 1995 Prof. Dr. Thomas Beschorner has been engaged in teaching ever since 1995. From 1995 to 1998, he taught at the commercial vocational and training centre of the Bildungsgesellschaft Genius-Institut in Kassel. Since 2000 he has taught at the Universities of Erfurt, Oldenburg (prize for good teaching in 2006) and Montreal. The range of topics which he has taught to date is unusually wide and is accompanied by an enormous additional engagement in the organisation of summer schools and similar events; in 2008, for instance, he launched the Transatlantic Doctoral Academy on Corporate Responsibility, which brings together international doctoral students in a series of workshops and conferences.
