The Uni app presented here is browser-based and can be directly activated through the respective smartphone browsers. It does not have to be purchased through an AppStore. The mobile app has been optimised for iOS (Versions 3 & 4), Android (Versions 2.2.1 and 2.2.2) and Windows Phone 7 (Version 7.10 Mango). For all the functions to be available for use, the JavaScript must be enabled.

The following functionalities are available in the first version:

  • News – RSS feed of the University of St.Gallen
  • Calendar function – list of the current course programme and the public lecture courses and events of the University of St.Gallen
  • Address directory – HSG address directory, including room information and direct call and e-mail functionality
  • Map – campus maps and building layouts
  • Transport – public transport planner, bus departure times, taxi numbers
  • Mensa – menu plan of the restaurant in the Main Building

In addition, the app provides emergency information and links to University organisations such as HSG Alumni and the Student Union. The “Settings” tab enables users to adjust the order of the individual icons individually and to show and hide individual functionalities.

Origin in a research project
The Uni app has its origin in the research project which was launched by the Institute of Information Management (IWI-HSG) in cooperation with the University’s IT Services and which was supported by the Swiss development programme SWITCH. The functionalities included in the app were selected on the basis of a survey among University members in the course of last year.

Further functionalities in the pipeline
It is planned that the version that has been released now will be extended in 2012 with further functionalities such as a personalised timetable and mobile access to Library data.
