Technology Studies

The Department of Technology Studies is dedicated to researching the role of science and technology in society.

Drawing on and contributing to the multidisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS), our research and teaching explores questions about the role of scientific knowledge in society and the impact of technology on everyday life and vice versa. We are especially interested in the question how agency, accountability and autonomy are transformed in the digital age. We study this overarching question in different settings including research labs, hospitals, technology demonstrations and events as well as in the workplace or at home.

From 1 February 2024, Prof. Dr Tanja Schneider has taken up a new position as Associate Professor of Science and Technology Studies at the Danish Technical University (DTU) in DK-Copenhagen. The management of the Department of Technology Studies at the University of St.Gallen is therefore changing.

Our team is currently conducting (digital)_ethnographic or ethnographically-inclined research on the following topics:

future of food; datafication of health; apps; valuation practices; care practices; knowledge production and circulation
