The MLA International Bibliography is the most important bibliography in the fields of literature, linguistics (including art and sign languages) and folklore of all modern areas of philology. The following subjects are included: language, literature, linguistics, folklore, English/American studies, German studies, classical philology, Oriental studies/other languages, Romance languages and literature and Slavic studies. This is supplemented by entries relating to a certain number of other humanities subjects.
In addition to around 4400 journals (refer to the MLA Directory of Periodicals), a representative selection of collective writings, series, conference reports, commemorative publications, reference works, references to Dissertation abstracts and, to a lesser extent, monographs, are constantly evaluated for this bibliography of secondary literature. Primary sources (except critical editions) and reviews (except longer review articles) are not included.
The MLA International Bibliography covers the time period from 1926 on and contains more than 2 million bibliographical references. Over 66.000 citations are added every year. Since April 2008, the MLA International Bibliography also contains abstracts, presently some 9000 abstracts from the PMLA, Project Muse, JSTOR and German Quarterly.
