Compulsory accident insurance (Unfallversicherung, UV) Accident insurance covers accidents at work, occupational sickness and non-occupational accidents; however, the latter are only covered if the employee is employed at least 8 hours per week. The insurance is voluntary for the self-employed. The insurance is provided by the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund (SUVA) or other authorized insurers, depending on the category of employer. Contributions (premiums) are based on thousandths of insured income, are deducted directly from salary, and vary depending on the company. The portion of the premium for occupational accidents and sickness is charged to the employer while the employee pays for the non-occupational accidents portion.
