MilVrb HSG, as part of the official official channels, is the legal representation of students at Master's level in the Joint Medical Master's Programme both vis-à-vis the Swiss Armed Forces and the University of St.Gallen (HSG). Students who are in the Bachelor's level of the JMM at the University of Zurich are welcome to seek advice from MilVrb HSG, but no official representation of their interests is possible. In order to follow the official channels, they must contact the relevant person responsible at the University of Zurich or the faculty.
The military training to become an officer (military doctor / military pharmacist) in the medical forces is aligned with the academic curriculum of the medical degree programme (doctor, dentist and pharmacist), so that the course of studies can be easily coordinated with the cadre training of the army both in terms of content and timing.
Ideally, you will have completed your basic training (RS) before starting your studies (as recommended by the Swiss Armed Forces) or during your Bachelor's degree at the University of Zurich. If not, the recommendation of the Swiss Armed Forces and MilVrb HSG is to complete the recruit school (RS) during the lecture-free period in summer (summer RS). Winter RS is not recommended, as it cannot be ideally coordinated with studies and usually results in a gap year (which can be combined with a language study trip or internships, for example).
Recommendation and variants for choosing the time of basic and cadre training:
(This recommendation is analogous to the recommendation of the Swiss Armed Forces)
Basic training (RS) and cadre course 1 Med (UOS)
Before the start of studies or between the 1st and 2nd year of studies (Bachelor level):
Prerequisite: Passed aptitude test for studies (EMS) or proof of a place at a faculty.
Option 1 | Option 2 |
The basic training (RS) to become a military doctor is a shortened recruit school of 6 weeks (from 27th week to 32nd week). Immediately afterwards, the NCO School UOS (Cadre Course 1 Medicine / KK 1 Med) can also be completed in 6 weeks (from 33rd week to 38th week). The KK 1 Med only takes place once a year and enables a seamless entry into the study programme in the HS. | The basic training (RS) of 6 weeks is completed between the 2nd and 3rd semester and a fractionation to the next year (summer) is requested in order to fulfil the UOS (Kaderkurs 1 Medizin / KK 1 Med) of 6 weeks. |
The MilVrb HSG recommends variant 1.
Cadre course 2 Med (OS)
The officer school OS for military doctors (Kaderkurs 2 Medizin / KK 2 Med) lasts 8 weeks and can be completed at Master's level between the 2nd and 3rd semester as well as between the 4th and 5th semester.
Practical service (earning off)
This is followed by 12 weeks of practical service, usually after obtaining the Federal Diploma.
Recruit school without cadre course
Medical students who are not intended to continue their training complete the normal basic training (RS) of 18 weeks. A "holiday semester" is recommended here.
