Training on appointment procedures with optional coaching - 28 & 29 April 2025

The training is designed to deliver skills and knowledge that are relevant for you to get prepared for the appointment process and improve your chances of success.

You have little or no experience with appointment procedures but will be applying soon? The training course systematically prepares you for the different stages of applying for professorships at university.

The morning workshop focuses on methodically preparing you for the appointment process and developing an individual application strategy. You will get advice on

  • the presentation of your written application documents
  • basic conditions and the course of the appointment process in German-speaking countries (other university systems may also be included)

A team member of our HSG Faculty Affairs Office will finish off the morning session with an input that will give you insides to the appointment procedure at HSG. A 45-minute one-on-one consultation session can be booked in the afternoon. You can clarify your individual concerns, get feedback on application documents or research and teaching concepts.

  • Particularities of appointment procedures in different academic systems

10.15: The appointment procedure at HSG (Dr. Sandra Weimer, Faculty Affairs)

11.15: Coffee break

11.30: Preparing for an application

  • Do you need strategies?
  • Q&A: Designing the application dossier (cover letter, CV, concepts)

12.30: End of the first part

Individual coachings spanning 45 minutes can be booked for the afternoon or online in the days thereafter.

 

Preliminary Agenda Day 2

9.00: Preparing for the hearing

  • Scientific talk/teaching unit
  • Interview with the Committee (rules of the game, typical questions)

10.30: Coffee break

  • Training session on how to deal with difficult or challenging questions: Developing argumentation strategies

11.30: Negotiation strategies for appointment negotiations

  • What happens after the “call”? Appointment negotiation practices in different academic systems
  • Items for negotiations (start-up package, investment means, staff, rooms, annual budget, salary)
  • Negotiation strategies

12.30: End of the second part

Individual coachings spanning 45 minutes can be booked for the afternoon or online in the days thereafter.

 

Format: Workshops in the morning, one-on-one consultations in the afternoon.

Trainer: Dr. Margarete Hubrath (uni-support), trainer, consultant and coach in academia since 2001 on a national and international level with a main focus on appointment trainings
