Open House: HSG invites you to a voyage of discovery at Open SQUARE

Approximately 44 student clubs, institutions and educational facilities from HSG will offer more than 70 programmes for children and adults for the festivities. "For the first time, HSG’s student clubs will be putting on a joint program in one place, making it possible to experience the entire spectrum of student-driven activities. That's what pleases me most about our Open SQUARE," says Philippe Narval, the venue's artistic director. Other institutions from the city of St.Gallen will also be involved. For example, FC St.Gallen with the video "We belong to St.Gallen" will help kick off the HSG’s anniversary year.

Open SQUARE will invite guests to enjoy not only a freshly tapped keg of St.Gallen beer but to take part in a Japanese tea ceremony. St.Gallen chocolatier Miriam di Natale will be on hand to demonstrate how fine chocolate is made and will also be offering a nibble. Those who prefer a hearty meal will be able to feast on raclette or fortify themselves with a coffee from the bistro. 

Experience the acoustics of the building during concerts from the UniChoir and the Orchestra of the University of St.Gallen, turn your old clothes into new fashion with the sustainable fashion association Un-Dress. Follow political discussions, short lectures on artificial intelligence, or try the trendy sport Roundnet. If you're more in the mood for a rugby challenge, HSG’s Silverbacks Rugby Sevens can introduce you to the sport. Personal development will be offered in the coaching corner. Workshops on topics related to management, sustainability, technology and digitalization are organized throughout the day.

Panel discussion: Rebuilding the education landscape in Ukraine

Ukrainian parliamentarian Lisa Yasko and HSG professor Ulrich Schmid will discuss in English how the reconstruction of education in Ukraine can be shaped. The panel: "A lost generation? Rebuilding education after a year of war in Ukraine" is organized by students involved in the St.Gallen Symposium.

Pop-up daycare center and children's program

A visit to SQUARE is worthwhile for families: children can paint the large window panes, treat their stuffed animal in the teddy bear hospital, discover different countries on a post run or try out how a computer learns to see with the School of Computer Science. In addition to a pop-up daycare center, Töggelä, Twister, scavenger hunts and Mario Kart will provide varied activities for children.

More about SQUARE

In February 2022, HSG opened an impact space to explore the future of learning and teaching. The glass building designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, is an inviting place for encounters and a forum for dialogue – between academia, society, business, politics and culture. Managed by a directorate, SQUARE is unique in its approach: it combines the future-oriented education of students with the lifelong learning of graduates and provides the public with new access to the University. Funded entirely by private donations to the HSG Foundation, the project is the largest fundraising effort in HSG's history. 

During the semester, personalities from business, science, politics and culture are guests – so-called "Personalities in Residence" and "Artists in Residence". Over the course of several days, they interact closely with students and guests, work on projects together and share their ideas. The "Personalities and Artists in Residence" contribute new content and can also launch their own formats. 

In the spring semester of 2023, for example, the Ukrainian politician Lisa Yasko, the transformation researcher and author Maja Göpel, and Marc Walder, CEO of Ringier, will be among the "Personalities in Residence" at SQUARE.
