Beginning of the semester at the University of St.Gallen

The 2018 autumn semester starts on 17 September at the University of St.Gallen (HSG). Around 1700 new students will get to know HSG during freshers' week from 10 to 14 September. In a case study they will address the topic of "Digitisation - Switzerland in Transition".

6 September 2018. One week before the beginning of the semester, the new students of the assessment year will converge on the campus of the University of St.Gallen for freshers' week to familiarise themselves with the university environment. Freshers' week is an integral part of the assessment year at HSG. It prepares undergraduates for content- and organisation-specific aspects of their day-to-day life on campus.

During freshers' week, 160 tutors will supervise the new students during their work on the case study on the topic of "Digitisation - Switzerland in Transition". The twelve best groups will present their work on Friday, 14 September, at the closing event in the St. Gallen's Olma Hall 2.1 in front of the jury, the new assessment year, numerous guests and HSG staff.

HSG kick-off days on the topic of resources

In the week from 10 to 15 September 2018, HSG will also welcome around 700 new students to the Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. levels as part of the English-language kick-off days. The introductory programme offers the newcomers insights into the organisational aspects of campus life. The topic chosen for the 2018 autumn semester is resources. During short presentations, speakers will shed light on the topic from different perspectives. In a variety of workshops, the students will deal with energy and climate issues, but also with the human body's physical and mental resources.

Number of students at the beginning of the semester

8,655 students enrolled at the University of St.Gallen for the 2018 autumn semester (previous year: 8,553 enrolled students). Some 1,783 students are expected in the assessment year (previous year: 1741); at Bachelor's level 3086 (previous year: 3026). There are 3167 enrolled at the Master's level (previous year: 3216). At Ph.D. Level, 605 persons are enrolled (previous year: 658) at the University of St.Gallen. Another 14 (17) students attended supplementary courses.

Detailed enrolment statistics for the 2018 autumn semester will be published as usual in mid-December. According to experience, the number of students is likely to decrease until then. This is because some students are still in an orientation phase, do not start their degree course or drop out after a few weeks.
