Learn how to create professional-looking clips without a budget to publicize your research, advertise conferences and document departmental events on social media and the web

Attend this one-day hands-on workshop to gain a basic understanding of visual storytelling and useful production techniques that will allow you to create short video clips with your mobile phone on a shoestring budget.

After covering some theoretical foundations of visual narration and an overview of relevant legal frameworks, you will dive into supervised production of a “science video” and getting to know techniques, good storyline, editing video and using audio effectively. At the end of the day, you can publish your clip on your favorite social media channels, as an aspiring science filmmaker.

Learning Goals
Develop a storyline and choose a visual narrative for a research topic of your choice.
Conceive, write, plan, shoot and edit a short clip (<3 min) with your mobile camera (iPhone or Android).
Understanding basic techniques of visual storytelling, video production and editing.
Gain an overview of legal frameworks and freely available resources.

Trainer 
Dr. Felix Seyfarth is a video producer and digital learning designer. At HSG, he founded the Media Lab and was Senior Fellow Digital Learning at the Teaching Innovation Lab from 2014 to 2018. He teaches Digital Storytelling for BA and MA students in the Contextual Studies program and is an associate researcher at the Institute for Systemic Management and Governance (IMP-HSG).

Prerequisites
No prerequisites are needed, the workshop is designed for beginners and does not presuppose any technical know-how. We will concentrate on effective techniques of visual storytelling, that can also be used for conference posters and presentations. You should bring your mobile phone with a fully charged battery and a charging cable as well as a laptop or tablet.

Target group
PhD students and Post-Docs who would like to acquire new skills in video production and visual storytelling, especially regarding the use of digital media in online publishing and social media. (Max. 8 participants)
