English Studies

The Department offers courses for students on the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world and in English language; in addition, we offer regular series of public lectures on literary topics.

For detailed information about the language courses and the current public lecture series, see Teaching and News and Events. The Bachelor courses form part of degree programmes in Business Administration, Economics, International Affairs and Law. The Master courses contribute to the University's eleven degree programmes in these subject areas.

The Bachelor level courses focus on the close reading of literary texts, predominantly from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The aim is to foster students' skills in textual analysis and interpretation and to familiarise them with selected aspects of English-speaking cultures. In order to convey the geographical and social diversity of these, exemplary texts are chosen from regions within the British Isles, North America and South Asia.

Courses at Master level are more interdisciplinary in character. They typically combine literary material with historical surveys, socio-political topics, or themes related to the students' main areas of study.
