Library catalogue

How do I find books in the IDS St.Gallen catalogue?
The catalogue is set up in a simple way and will lead you to the necessary functions. On the start page, you will find brief instructions with various examples of keyword and list searches. More information about using the catalogue can be found here. In addition, more information can be found by using the Help function in the catalogue. The University of St.Gallen Library also holds regular courses. Current course dates and details can be found under the Course programme for the University of St.Gallen. The catalogue contains all books that are owned by the HSG Library and titles of all subscribed printed journals.

How do I find journal articles in the IDS St.Gallen catalogue?
Articles are not included in the University of St.Gallen Library catalogue (exception: articles by HSG teaching faculty published in journals and collected works). To find an article, you will need the following information: title of the journal in which the article appears, year, volume, page numbers. Search for the title of the journal under “Browse a list/Journal beginning with …” This will take you to the desired journal page. From there, you can find the correct year and/or volume in the displayed collection. If the desired volume is available in the Library, you can read/copy/scan it in the Library or order a copy of the desired article by e-mail (PDF) or regular mail (click on “photocopy request” in the catalogue and follow the on-screen instructions).
If you do not know which journal your desired article was published in, you can find the exact citation in a database. For this, you can use databases licensed by the University of St.Gallen.
Access to the electronic journals is possible using the electronic journals library (EZB). This allows you to view electronic versions of articles, print them or save them. For this, you must be working on a campus computer in St.Gallen or be an employee/student of the University of St.Gallen. Instructions for working from a home computer can be found here.

The book that I am looking for is not borrowed, but it is not on the shelf. What do I do?
Ask at the circulation desk or the information desk. It may be that the book is brand new and is still in the new purchases shelf, or that the book was recently returned and is still on the sorting cart. If this is not the case, we will look for the book during the next two weeks at regular intervals. You will receive a pick-up notice from us if we find the book. If the book cannot be found, you will receive a message and we will order a new copy.

Can I access the catalogue with EndNote?
Yes. More information for installation and configuration, including the Connection File, can be found under Information for Endnote.

What does “IDS St.Gallen” mean?
IDS is an abbreviation for “Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz”, which consists of the following network members: NEBIS (including the Zurich and Lausanne ETH libraries, the Zurich Central Library and the University of Zurich), IDS Basel/Bern, IDS St.Gallen and IDS Lucerne.

What do the green dots on the back of documents mean? How can I tell that documents may not be borrowed?
Documents that cannot be borrowed are marked with a green dot on the back of the book. They are part of the permanent collection and cannot be borrowed (exception: in urgent cases, these documents can be borrowed from 15 minutes prior to closing of the library until 15 minutes after the library opens).
In the Library catalogue, these permanent items are marked with “on-site use”. See also “Circulation Restrictions” in the Borrowing Regulations.

Why can’t HSG diploma theses be borrowed?
HSG diploma theses were written in accordance with the Course Regulations up until 2004. Only 6 weeks were provided for preparing a diploma thesis. This means that the standard and academic rigour cannot be compared with a Licentiate thesis or a Master’s thesis, which were prepared over several months. In addition, there is only a single archive copy of each diploma thesis at the HSG, which is at the Library. Because of this, the Library must take extreme care with these works. Copying of an entire work by Library employees is not permitted for copyright reasons.

Databases, searching in general

I would like to search the databases and electronic journals of the University of St.Gallen Library from home. How does that work?
This is only possible for students/employees of the University of St.Gallen. Instructions can be found here. External users can only perform database research using the computers in the Library.

Can I use my own laptop in the Library and access Library resources? Do you have WLAN?
In general, this is possible. WLAN is available in the entire Library. There are some limitations for external users. More information about WLAN and using your own laptop can be found here.

Inter-library loan, reservations, orders, IDS courier

How do I find books or journal articles that are not present at IDS St.Gallen?
Instructions for steps to take if you cannot find what you need in our catalogue can be found under Inter-library loan.

I accidentally ordered a book by mail or by courier, but I would like to pick it up at the Library. Can I change this?
If the book is not yet in the possession of the postal service/courier, this order can be taken back. Send a message to: bibliothek@unisg.ch or call us at +41 71 224 22 70. We will take care of the rest for you.

How do I cancel a mistaken reservation/mail shipment order/IDS courier order?
Reservations/mail shipment orders for borrowed documents can be cleared from your user account: Catalogue IDS St.Gallen > User account > Hold requests > Click the “Delete” button.
To cancel mail shipment orders and courier orders on documents that are not currently borrowed, contact the Library directly: bibliothek@unisg.ch or +41 71 224 22 70.
Reservation of documents for Library pick-up on items that are not borrowed may not be made, and will be deleted by the Library. Reason: the University of St.Gallen Library is an open library. You can pick up documents on the shelf yourself if they have not been borrowed.

How long are reserved documents kept for pick-up at the Library?
You have one week to pick up reserved documents. If you do not need a reserved book, please notify us at bibliothek@unisg.ch or +41 71 224 22 70.

Can I pick up a book from your library and/or return it to other libraries?
Yes, courier service is available between some university libraries. You can select the pick-up location in the catalogue when you place an order. There is a charge for this service. Returns can also be made at participating libraries. A list of participating libraries and the steps you need to take can be found under IDS courier.

Is it possible to return documents to the library by mail?
Yes indeed. You can also return them by mail (address: Universität St. Gallen, Bibliothek, Dufourstr. 50, 9000 St. Gallen). The valid date of return is the day the books actually arrive at the library. The user will be responsible for any overdue returns, damages or lost documents.
Please note that, in case you are sending the books from abroad, you will have to tag the books as follows: Rücksendung Bibliotheksbücher, Warenwert = 5. If this is not done correctly, customs charges may result. Any such charges will be recouped from the user.

How do I borrow a document with the location “Storage”?
These documents are not in the open stacks area and must be ordered. Please order the required media directly from the Library catalogue. All ordered books are delivered to the University Library at no charge by a courier service daily (Monday to Friday). Books that are ordered before 8 am can be picked up at the circulation desk after 12 pm on the same day. You will receive a pick-up invitation by e-mail. Please note that no books are picked up from this storage facility on Saturday. Ordering instructions (PDF, 170 KB)

How can I borrow documents with the location “Archive”?
These documents are not in the open stacks area and must be ordered. Order forms for documents in the archive can be obtained at the circulation desk. Please fill out the form and drop it off at the circulation desk. The times at which documents are picked up and when documents will be ready for pickup are listed on the form.

How can I borrow or use a document with the location “For.stelle W'geogr.” and/or “For.gemeinsch. Rechtsw.”?
These documents are not located in the main Library (Dufourstrasse 50) and must be used or borrowed from the institute in question.
For.stelle W'geogr. (Research Institute of Economic Geography, FWR-HSG): Books can generally be borrowed for 14 days. Materials may only be used after making an appointment by e-mail: fwr-hsg@unisg.ch.

User account, password, user card, messages

How do I obtain a user number and a password? How much does it cost?
All important information about registration can be found under Information about registering.
Use of the Library is free of charge. Information about our paid services and warning fees can be found in the list of fees.

I already have a user card from a different university library, from the St.Gallen Cantonal Library (Vadiana) or from a cantonal school library of the Canton of St.Gallen (e.g. Sargans Cantonal School). Can I use this card at the IDS St.Gallen?
If this library is also a member of the IDS network or SGBN, you can use your user card and password at our library as well. You will not need to re-register.

I have forgotten my password. What should I do?
Please contact us at the Library and give us your name and user number, so that we can give you a new password:
bibliothek@unisg.ch or by telephone at +41 71 224 22 70.

I would like to receive Library messages by e-mail instead of regular mail. What should I do?
Go to your user account in the Library catalogue and log on. Select the link "Personal Information". Enter your valid e-mail address. We will then send you messages by e-mail.

I am not receiving e-mails from the Library. What is the problem?
There are several possible reasons that you are not receiving e-mails:
if your mailbox is full, you may not be able to receive new messages.
Your Internet service provider or your mail host may be blocking our e-mails because they are incorrectly recognised as spam. You can prevent this by adding our e-mail address (bibliothek@unisg.ch) to your trusted contacts.
Your mail program settings (such as spam filters) may not allow e-mails from the unisg.ch domain. You can avoid this by adding the domain “unisg.ch” to your “safe list” (such as in Hotmail).
The e-mail address listed in your user account may not be valid.

Unfortunately, we have no way of ensuring that our messages are received. However, our borrowing due dates based on our Borrowing Regulations remain valid in all cases. Our warning fees for late returns also remain valid, in accordance with our Regulations of Use. Please note that due dates can always be checked using the “user account” function.

Can I borrow books without a user ID card if I have forgotten it?
In general, a user ID card must always be presented when borrowing. If you have forgotten your card, you can use your personal identification card to borrow books in exceptional cases.

Can a friend borrow books in my name or pick up reservations that are being held for me? What is necessary for this?
This is generally possible, if your friend has your user ID card. If he or she does not have your user ID card, we will need written confirmation from you that a third party is permitted to borrow on your account. For this, simply write an e-mail to bibliothek@unisg.ch or give your friend a written declaration to present to us.

Deadlines, warnings, fees

How long may I keep borrowed documents?
All information about due dates can be found in the Borrowing regulations.

What happens if I return a document too late?
Our warning procedure is described in the Borrowing regulations.

Can borrowed documents be renewed online?
No, this is no longer necessary. After a due date of 14 days, the due date will be extended by 14 days automatically if a document is not reserved. The maximum borrowing period is 182 days (= 6 months).

I have lost/damaged a book. What should I do now?
Please notify the library of the loss or damage as soon as possible (mediareturn@unisg.ch). Depending on the circumstances it may be worthwhile to have an extra look for the missing book. If it definitely cannot be found the library will replace the missing or damaged book. We will charge you the actual cost of the replacement plus an administrative fee. Any overdue fees that have been incurred until the time you notify the library will have to be paid as well. In case the particular edition of the book that was damaged or lost is out of print, the library can decide to purchase an alternative edition. If there is no way to acquire the book at all, the library will order a reproduction to be made of the particular title (administration and reproduction fee).

What do I need to do if my account has been locked due to a 3rd warning?
First, you will need to return all borrowed documents. Then, all fees will need to be paid. If the fees have not yet been invoiced, you can pay them in cash at the Library. Otherwise, please use the paying-in slip. Your account will not be re-activated until all fees have been paid and all documents have been returned.

How can I pay fees?
For the first month, you can pay fees in cash at the Library. If the fees have not been paid in cash by the end of the month, you will receive an invoice from us with a paying-in slip.
