FAQ This page provides answers to frequently asked questions concerning topics such as visa requirements and work permits. Is a visa necessary for entering Switzerland? Your nationality determines whether or not you need to apply for an entry visa. Information about countries for which visas are required and entry formalities can be found under Arrival procedures, in the Student Guide Guest Students and in a letter included with your acceptance letter. Do I need to have valid health insurance? Yes. We recommend all guest students to have sufficient health insurance coverage during their stay in Switzerland. Is the the length of stay more than 90 days, guest students (regardless of nationality) must provide valid proof of health insurance. More information can be found in the Arrival Guide, which was sent to you by way of the coordinator at your home school after electronic nomination. Does an "L" residence permit allow me to work in Switzerland? No. Work unrelated to your studies must be approved by canton officials. The employer must apply for a work permit for students of EU/EFTA nationalities. Due to current regulations, students without EU/EFTA nationality are highly unlikely to receive a work permit. Can I bring my partner and/or children with me to Switzerland? Yes. However, we are not able to assist you with applying for the necessary visas, approval procedures, etc.. Information about the HSG’s childcare options can be found under advisory services. If your school-age children travel with you, you will need to make contact with schools in the area yourself. The International School St.Gallen is a private School located near the University. May I de-register before my departure? Yes. You can de-register up to six weeks before your departure. You must tell the residents' office your departure date, which will be activated at the given time. May I keep the "L" residence permit? Yes.
