Admission to a Ph.D. degree course

A recognised university Master’s or Diplom is the prerequesite for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

Degree
The basic requirement for admission to a Ph.D. degree course is a Master’s degree from the HSG or equivalent consecutive university degree consisting of at least 270 ECTS credits. The entire education (Bachelor's and Master's degree) have to be equivalent to that required by the University of St.Gallen. Admission with an MBA qualification is not possible.

Grade averages
You must be able to demonstrate a Swiss grade average of at least 5.00 (Germany/Austria 2.00; US GPA 3.5).

Confirmation of eligibility for doctoral studies
If you have not received your degree from the University of St.Gallen, you must provide clear evidence that you would be accepted to a Ph.D. programme at your home university, without any restrictions.

Supervisor's letter of recommendation
After completing the formal approval process, a letter of recommendation from your supervisor or letter of confirmation issued by the programme committee must be submitted. It is your responsibility to obtain this letter and submit it on time. It is not possible for the university administration to contact your professors.

Admission regulations specific to programmes
Please observe the particular admission regulations for the Ph.D. programmes Economics and Finance (PEF) and International Affairs and Political Economy (DIA).

Admission for applicants holding a Master’s degree in a different major
Admission with a Master’s degree in another major is possible. We do, however, require 18 to 20 ECTS credits of supplementary work from our Master’s Level. These credits must be completed by the end of your coursework.

First-time enrolment is carried out online.
If you were enrolled at the HSG in the past, please use the rematriculation form.

Enrolment deadlines
Fall Semester: 1 February to 30 April (15 August for Rematriculation and for Research Assistent)
Spring Semester: 1 September to 30 November (15 January for Rematriculation and for Research Assistent)
