FAQ
Here you can find answers to the most common questions about our Master’s programme in International Affairs and Governance (MIA).

When can MIA students take part in an exchange programme?
Exchange semesters are possible in the second or third term, although the second term is recommended. It is not possible to go abroad on an exchange during the first term,.
Can I start the MIA in the Spring Semester?
Yes. However, you can only apply for a double-degree programme in the Fall Semester.
Is it possible to work while attending the MIA programme?
If you work part-time during your studies, it is possible to extend the MIA Programme to 8 semesters.
Is it possible to enter the MIA programme directly with a licentiate in economics and law, for instance from the University of Zurich?
For external applicants, the same requirements apply for admission to the MIA Programme as for HSG Bachelor's graduates. You must demonstrate that you have completed the compulsory subjects of our interdisciplinary Bachelor in International Affairs (BIA) or equivalent courses of your external degree. It is possible to make up missing credits during the MIA Programme (see also Admission to the MIA Programme).
I have completed the B.A. HSG with a major in Business Administration. Which supplementary work must I complete before starting the MIA programme?
The same conditions apply for graduates of the University of St.Gallen in a different major, i.e. any non-BIA Bachelor's degree. You need to complete the BIA's core requirements or submit equivalent supplementary work.
Do applicants for the MIA programme need to demonstrate proficiency in English before beginning studies?
External and internal applicants have to provide proof of Level II English proficiency when applying or at the time of enrolment at the very latest. Alternatively, a TOEFL (written 600, computer 250, Internet 100) or IELTS (minimum score: 7.5, academic version) can be accepted. This is to ensure that all MIA students are proficient in English at the start of their studies (see also the implementation provisions for languages).
Which activities and organisations are suitable for the recognition of practice credits?
"Qualified activities in areas related to politics, economics and law” are required, in particular, internships with governmental, international governmental and nongovernmental organisations, positions with political agencies and other public institutions. In the past, MIA students have successfully completed internships, for instance, at a political foundation in Brussels, at the Foreign Office in Berlin, at NGOs in Thailand and India and at the State Chancellery of the Canton of St.Gallen.
How can I receive practice credits for my internship?
Please observe the implementation provisions for the practice credits in the MIA Programme. You can then submit a request (no particular form required) to the MIA programme's office. If approved, upon completion of your work experience submit a final report to the MIA office, which will decide, along with the Dean of Studies, about crediting. In general, work can only be credited for work completed at the Master’s Level.
Can I study in the MIA programme, participate in an exchange semester and also participate in a double-degree programme, for instance with Sciences Po?
This combination is not possible, as must earn at least 60 credits at the University of St.Gallen.
