Additional Information

Dieter Thomä, born in 1959, was full professor of philosophy at the University of St. Gallen from 2000 to 2023. He started his professional career as a trainee at the Henri Nannen School of Journalism in Hamburg and as an editor at Sender Freies Berlin. He studied in Berlin and Freiburg/Breisgau, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1989. He taught at universities in Paderborn, Rostock, New York, Berlin, and Essen. He received a price for essay writing at the Joseph Roth journalism contest in Klagenfurt in 1996 and obtained his post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) in 1997. During his tenure at the University of St. Gallen, he was Dean of the School for Cultural Studies (2002-2005) and co-director of the M.A. program “Management-Organization-Culture” (20011-2023). Since 2003, he is on the editorial board of the series „Zur Einführung“ (Junius). He was a fellow at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles (2002-3), at the Max Weber Center in Erfurt (2007-8), and at the Institutes for Advanced Study in Berlin (2009-10) and Princeton (2018-9). He held visiting professorships at the University of California at Davis (2012), Brown University (2013) and Yale University (2021). His areas of specialization are social and political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of culture, aesthetics, and phenomenology. The Socratic question of „how to live“ steers his philosophical questioning. He is the author of ten monographs translated into several languages (English, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Turkish).
