A dialogue between art and architecture

The HSG is not just a place of learning but is also an acclaimed location in the art world. In terms of the quantity and quality of the artwork, the HSG is comparable to a museum.

In the Library Building of the HSG is Gerhard Richters

The way in which artwork is presented in the spaces of our university is anything but museum-like. Artwork is integrated into the architecture and the students’ day-to-day lives. Virtually all the artwork was created by the artists specifically for the space for which it was destined and not simply tacked on afterwards. The result is a dialogue between art and architecture that permeates through our buildings.

A variety of architectural forms
In the main building, which is recognised as a major symbol of the 1960s well beyond Swiss borders, art is the counterpart to architecture. In the library building, built in 1989, the interaction between the works of art and the diversity of architectural forms takes on a narrative quality. The executive campus (1995) is an updated version of this sophisticated fusion of art and architecture.

Works by Arp, Richter and Giacometti
Works by surrealists including Arp, Giacometti and Miró, feature prominently in our main building. The library building and executive campus house paintings and sculptures by neo-expressionist and Italian transavantgarde artists. There are also works that reflect various contemporary art trends. With works by Richter, Baumgarten, Burckhardt, Disler, Cucchi, Braque and Paladino, the HSG boasts a collection of which any museum would be proud.
