Supplementary work

Supplementary work ensures students are prepared for the subject matter they will encounter at the Master’s level. Supplementary work consists of compulsory subjects from the corresponding Bachelor’s programme.

Supplementary work and certificates
Depending on your degree, requirements in the form of supplementary work may be a condition of your admission to the Master's degree course. Supplementary work is subdivided into course-related examinations and certificates (language, accounting). Course-related examinations relate to the compulsory subjects of the corresponding Bachelor’s degree.

Please note
Supplementary work must be completed within one year of the start of your studies. If the certificate has not been awarded and is not submitted, studies will be suspended at the selected level. Exchange studies are also no longer possible in this case.
Two exceptions to this are proof of linguistic proficiency and accounting proficiency, which must be earned by the end of the Master’s degree course.

Credits for supplementary work
You can apply for credit for previously performed course work if this work

  • is equivalent in terms of content and scope,
  • has been completed as part of a university programme,
  • was awarded a satisfactory grade,
  • and if no suspension applies to the relevant major.

Work that has been completed as part of coursework at a university of applied sciences (German Fachhochschule) will not be awarded credit. For programmes with the basket solution (IMT, MSC, MAccFin, MBF) crediting is not possible either.

Proof of linguistic proficiency
Students with Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees from other universities must demonstrate proficiency in two foreign languages. This can be tested either at the HSG or by taking external language tests. More information about languages can be found at implementation provisions.

Proof of accounting proficiency
Students at the University of St.Gallen must demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in accounting. Accounting certificates (recognised courses and examinations) equivalent to the HSG test and have been completed before starting studies at the HSG may be recognised.
It is not possible to fulfil this requirement by taking an external accounting examination after you have begun your studies at the HSG. Detailed information can be found at implementation provisions.
