Career opportunities
Graduates of the HSG Master’s programme in Economics enjoy a great variety of career opportunities.
A sound knowledge of Economics lays the foundations for positions in management and economic policy, as well as for positions in research. Application-oriented empirical analysis techniques support and evaluate strategic decision-making processes.
Understanding economic processes
Our Master in Economics programme provides the principles which are necessary in order to understand, analyse and develop economic processes.
Economists frequently pursue an academic career or chose a career in the field of banking and insurance, public administration or in business editing, but also in traditional management.
In Switzerland the demand for economics specialists is particularly high and salaries are above average.
Fabian Schnell, economiesuisse

"After the MEcon I was able to start at economiesuisse as a member of the research staff in the field of economic policy. I am able to apply the knowledge, models and ways of thinking I was taught during the course directly to current issues of economic policy in my everyday work. The MEcon with its flexible curriculum gave me the tools I need for this. Economiesuisse is also allowing me to complete my Ph.D. studies (PEF) at the HSG." |
Rebecca German, Vaudoise Versicherungen
 |
"Since completing my Master’s course in Economics I have been working at the Vaudoise insurance company in Lausanne as an insurance mathematician. My work includes the annual Swiss Solvency Test (the calculation of the real coverage ratio and the real insurance risk), the calculation of the insurance reserves and the drawing up of statistics for the portfolio. I find my knowledge of econometrics is particularly useful for this work." |
Stephan Fretz, McKinsey
 |
"After being awarded my MEcon degree in the Fall 2009 I started working at McKinsey & Company. Analytical thinking and an understanding of interactions and teamwork play a central role in the daily life of a consultant. All these skills are promoted by the diversity of the Economics course at the HSG. I am pleased that I can now apply these skills in a very dynamic environment in order to resolve exciting issues." |
Mario Senn, Volkswirtschaftsdirektion (Economics department), Canton of Zurich
|
"The comprehensive treatment of the subject of regulation and its role in the real political environment as taught in the MEcon equipped me perfectly for my current job. I am responsible for the implementation of the new Zurich deregulation law and have to examine new edicts and existing law for their effects from an economic point of view. The main focus is on the working expenditure caused for businesses by regulations. The ability to use a solution-based approach when analysing complex problems that I acquired during my degree course comes into play every day in my work." |
